After going through an office closing and losing the job I'd had for a decade, and then 6 months in a windowless, shared office, I moved into my new spot this week. I think it was worth the wait. Honestly, I just feel fortunate to have a job right now, so a spot like this is just incredible to me. As a crazy added bonus/sign/something, a bald eagle just flew past...

Baller!
I know how you feel about the no windows. My first job out of college was a defense engineering firm in an office that used to be a warehouse, so no windows. In the winter you’d arrive when it’s dark and leave when it’s dark, never seeing the sunlight unless you went out for lunch. That crap gets depressing

Thanks, man. The sunsets are great; can’t wait to watch the thunderstorms roll in. It’s still a shared space, but it’s big enough that it’s no issue (and I get along very well with my office mate).

Two is fantastic, and almost necessary for a lot of the mapping work I do. The wall-mounted monitor is a old, heavy, fairly low-res plasma they had laying around, so they’re just glad to see it get some use. We’ll use it for previewing maps and presentations some, but it will be for epic time-lapse nature scenes most of the time - ha!

I’m software & mapping support for a group of geologists and engineers at a small, private oil & gas company. I started in civil engineering and then got a degree in graphic design. I still do freelance design work on the side, but this is a really good fit for me as a day job.

I’m excited that my new desk at work has windows. my first desk in this place was a secluded bricked wall corner. Nice and private, but very dark.
Now I actually park right outside my window (ground floor) so I’m about 8 feet from my car right now haha. The other day I did remote start and I was close enough to the car that my bluetooth turned on and started playing pandora out in the car while I was still at my desk.

The potential for monitor glare is high.
I have two windows at my back. I have to keep the blinds down so I can see my monitors. Even so, the afternoon sun peeks through the holes and puts a bright dotted line across the monitors that I can’t see through.
I’d turn everything around, but the work surface is attached to the cubicle walls and I can’t put the monitors on the window side.

I just moved desks temporarily. My new location is in a pretty terrible building, but the cube walls are low and there’s a wall of windows one cube away, so it’s a nice upgrade even though it’s (theoretically) temporary

I read one of your responses to a comment on the bottom. I'm a 3rd year Petroleum Eng student and I'm looking for an internship, any advice on what I can do? I'm already planning on staying in Tulsa this summer to increase my chances of working with a smaller oil company here since those chances almost go to 0 if I went home to California.

Network like crazy, and get to know as many people as possible in the industry (real relationships, if possible, not just acquaintances) . Start attending SPE meetings and maybe Tulsa Geological Society stuff as well, if you have an interest. The Mid-Con conference is next week: http://www.digitaloilconference.com/ It’s a rough time as you know, but it will get better eventually. Sticking in out in the short term will pay off handsomely in the long run! Best of luck going forward.

Thanks. It’s a rough time, of course, but I’m with a start-up that’s mostly un-invested, so that’s good in the short term. My wife and lots of my friends are in the business, too, so I’m hoping we see some kind of recovery in commodity prices this year so not too many more of them end up losing their jobs...

Back when I started college, I wanted to be a cartographer. I fell in love with the hand-drawn maps of WWII when I was a kid. I often wish I had followed that career path instead of music, but the two schools I applied to as a geography major turned me down, so I went general studies, couldn’t deal with math and science, and turned to the one thing I knew how to do, which was playing trumpet. I use that as an object lesson for my underachieving oldest son, saying that I’m on his case in math and science now because I want him to be able to follow whichever career path he wants in the future. He shouldn’t have to settle.

Nope, it’s a private side lot, it’s not the main entry way so I see some people come and go but for the most part only about 15 parking spots over here. There’s a garden between the parking spots and my window so the most foot traffic i get is during the year when gardeners/landscapers come by. Gotta watch out for that blinding sun in the afternoon though, thankfully we have shades.

You might want to look into it. More letters for the end of your name! We are starting to see GISP-preferred on more job announcements. There’s an exam which you can take before you complete the required experience. It’s a good idea to take it while you aren’t too far out of school. The exam only gets harder as you get further into your specialty.

A bracket to accommodate bigger brakes for the rear of the wagon. I 3d print the brackets to fit test, but this has been proving to be rather difficult, since I wanted to retain the stock caliper for E-brake purposes. I may just have to ditch that idea and settle for a line lock and leaving the car in gear just in case.

Hope he takes it to heart. I’m not sure if I’ve ever heard a professional musician said they “settled” with a career music, but I get what you’re saying. I also love maps and enjoy my work most days.
